What price can one put on their child's safety and well being? It has been wonderful to watch as our daughter is instructed in the manner of how to identify a stranger; more importantly what to do should one try to put hands on or harm our child. Through the training at Camdenton Martial Arts, our daughter has grown wiser and stronger. She's receiving the life skills that we want her to have. Camdenton Martial Arts is reinforcing what she is learning at home in regards to discipline and respect, and amplifying in areas that they specialize in with the martial arts.

The increases I have noticed from my eight year old son are amazing. He is faster, has better reflexes and is no longer clumsy because his balance has improved! He really is learning as well as participating in the lessons and I’m so proud of how far he’s come in such a short time. I am very excited to see how far he will go! I appreciate the staff of Camdenton Martial Arts so much for everything they do for these kids and my son!

My son James loves the helpful instructors as he has worked his way from a white belt up to now being a green belt! Now after school James has something to look forward to. Although challenging he is always encouraged to further his development, something Camdenton Martial Arts takes pride in. I strongly encourage martial arts lessons as I have watched James development in strength and discipline.

Gain Confidence while Learning Self-Defense

Self-defense is not about fighting. Rather, it involves avoiding and/or managing situations in which your health or dignity may be threatened. Self-defense involves mental, physical, and behavioral aspects. Learn how to respond to aggression. Learn what works for you. Confront your fears in the safe environment of the dojo(our training area), where you have instructors to help you and fellow students.

Kids Develop Positive Attitudes

Kids in my program learn to have a positive and respectful attitude. Kids learn to be respectful of their parents and teachers. You might even catch your child saying “Yes Ma’am or Yes Sir”!

About School Owner Guy Witt

Hello, my name is Guy Witt. I am an Eighth Degree (Hachidan) Blackbelt. I have my exemplary teacher (Hanshi) title in the art of Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do. I teach Camdenton Martial Arts. It is a combination of many different forms of martial arts. Our Dojo is a traditional Japanese/Okinawan fighting (Kumite) art that includes: the kicking, punching, and blocking techniques of Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do; the throwing and joint-locking techniques of Aiki-jujutsu (Toide); and the traditional weaponry of Okinawa (Kobudo), (i.e. the Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Kama, Nunchaku, as well as the sword techniques of the Samurai). It is a most unusual art requiring open-minded students with a desire to develop strength, flexibility, and dexterity.

I started studying martial arts in 1979, studying Shotokan Karate and Isshin-Ryu karate at the same time. I then studied Tae-kwon-do from 1981 until 1983 when I joined the United States Air Force. I was assigned to Bentwaters, England in 1984, where I started studying Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do from Sensei Roy Hobbs. By the end of 1984, I had earned my Brown belt and was teaching his classes when Sensei Hobbs was unavailable. In 1985, I assisted him in teaching the British police Arrest and Restraint Tactics classes. When Sensei Hobbs left England, I took over teaching for the last few months of my assignment. Sensei Hobbs is still my instructor and friend today.

While in the service, I taught Martial Arts at the Naval Weapons Station Youth Center, Goose Creek South Carolina from 1996-1999. In 2006, I retired from the USAF after 22 years of active service. I then started teaching full time at many locations: Whiteman AFB Youth center teaching an average of 15-25 children for over 14 years, Sterling Elementary in Warrensburg doing an afterschool martial arts program for 3 years. I also worked Sterling Elementary kids summer programs full time in 2016. I have been teaching Children and Adults for over 40 years.

Be Neither Target Nor Victim

Every individual, at some point in his or her life, has been victimized, exploited, or abused in some form or another. Whether this relates to a child being bullied at school, an adult being singled out at the workplace, or in more serious cases, an individual being mugged on the street, what the common feature of these unfortunate scenarios is the victim’s inability to avoid, escape, or resist. Fear is a powerful weapon, and a liability for those who do not prepare. If one does not take measures to develop himself or herself both mentally and physically, he or she will continue to arrive in situations where he or she is at a disadvantage and risk. Fortunately martial arts training is fun, helpful, and appropriate for all ages, genders, and fitness levels.

Not about violence

Watching a Bruce Lee movie may inspire you to become a martial artist, but the truth is that flashy combat is not what martial arts is mainly about. Do not think you can participate in martial arts training in order to intimidate or bully your way through life. You may learn to have “presence,” but you will also learn humility, self-control, and respect. At its very essence, martial arts is training for improvement of the body, mind, and spirit. The combative aspects of martial arts, while important, are only executed in self-defense as a last resort. While martial arts will certainly teach you various techniques and strategies that will help you in a physical confrontation, the main lesson that it aims to teach is learning when not to fight. A real martial artist is able to discern whether a conflict can be resolved without violence or physical self- defense is required.

Values of martial arts

Integrating the actual spirit of martial arts training into oneself can only come with practice. Initially you may view this kind of training simply as a means by which you can protect yourself on the streets or from bullies at school. However, martial arts teaches individuals much more than that. Through this kind of training, your character itself will be positively affected. Martial arts training helps individuals build focus, endurance, confidence, and most of all respect for self and others.

The greatest victory is always found in resolving a conflict without using any violence. While it is certainly true that certain cases may call for combat, this must always be viewed as a last resort. If you are looking to stand up to someone, martial arts will teach you to do so in an assertive yet respectful manner.
